Architecture competition task “Concept for Central Area and Pedestrian Street in Valga – Valka Twin-Town Centre”

Valka Municipality Council and Valga Town government are organizing an architecture competition task “Concept for Central Area and Pedestrian Street in Valga – Valka Twin-Town Centre”. The  aim  of the architecture  contest  is  to  find  the  best  and  most  suitable  design for the common  public space, including a Central Area and a Pedestrian Street in  the Twin-Town Centre of Valga - Valka. On 26th of February, 2016, at 11:00 an architectural competition’s presentation will be held at Grēcinieku Street 1, premises of the Regional Development Centre association. The presentation will be held by Vents Armands Krauklis, Chairman of Valka Municipality Council.

Both Municipalities want to gain a cozy and unique public area for our citizens and guests. Organizers of the competition expect to have the Central Area for daily use with eventuality of a smooth transformation for different events like the Border Market, the Town Festival etc. It is expected that the new Pedestrian Street would connect Lugaži Church in the center of Valka with Jaani Church in the center of Valga, because at this moment they are a significant visual dominances, but among them are psychical barriers. Both Central Area and Pedestrian Street should foresee space for small local businesses and for leisure time activities of citizens and guests, and thus revitalizing the Twin-Town Centre. The contest is organized within the frame work of the Estonian –Latvian Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2014-2020.

The competition will take place from 22nd of February 2016 till 18th of May 2016. The results of the competition will be announced till 10th of June 2016. The total prize fund of the competition is 20 000 €. The competition is organized in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Estonia and is announced: https://riigihanked.riik.ee/register/hange/169679.
